From the sellers about the homes history:
We believe the house was built about 1908. The house was originally owned and built by Julius Desenberg, who was one of the original oil barons in Mexia. Most of the information about the history of the house came from a gentleman living in town who had visited there many times as a young child, He was a nephew of Julius and had been living in Mexia just a few blocks down Canton in the 1920’s and 30’s.
The house original housed Julius and his immediate family as well as two Aunts who lived with them. The aunts lived in the front portion of the upstairs in the study and large bedroom. This gave them a living area with some privacy from the rest of the family.
The master bedroom was originally two large rooms, but owners previous to us had the wall removed and the door to the hallway closed to make an enormous master suite. What is now the master bedroom closet and bath was originally a summer sleeping porch.
One of the aunts was unable to walk the stairs, so the stairwell was designed to accommodate a chairlift on the stairs which was removed a few owners before us. The half bath downstairs has been restored to the original configuration, but during a previous remodel included a shower.
The house sits on three lots and has a large concrete pad in the back corner where there was a smaller servants cottage when the house was built.
The original wood floors are still present throughout the house and are in incredible condition for their age. The fireplaces had specialty tiles custom made and imported for the surrounds when house was built and the metal fireplace covers and insert were also custom made and imported at that time. The inside doors still have their ornate brass door knobs and original glass transoms for ventilation before air conditioning was added.
The side lights of the entryway door are cut into prisms and in the mornings the sun coming through the front door windows casts rainbows throughout the large front hallway and on the grand stair case. The side door still has the original etched glass with the initials “JD”. All the doors in the house are extra wide. For the time the house was built, the closet and storage space in the kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms are unbelievably large.
This site talks about Julius Desenberg being one of the founders of Mexia and his involvement with the Jewish community of Mexia. http://www.isjl.org/texas-mexia-encyclopedia.html
